Ribbon Skirts are a popular form of women’s attire in many Native American cultures. Some say a Ribbon Skirt represents an individual’s reclamation of identity and strength in womanhood. Others simply believe it is a great example of the ingenuity and adaptability of Native women, coming about in a time when traditional forms of attire were no longer possible. While, historically, many Native cultures practiced not wasting anything, women were forced to be creative and frugal, utilizing whatever fabrics and scraps were available to them on reservations and at trading posts. They would create beautiful skirts as works of art for friends and family. Traditionally, an individual’s first creation would be gifted to someone else. These items would be infused with goodness and love to bless those that would be wearing them. The designs themselves were impacted by these traditions; however, many women also create skirts that represent their Indian name or personal tastes. This soap celebrates the rich history of women’s roles within our cultures and the hope in our ever transforming future.
